To avoid burning chicken on the barbecue, partially precook bone in chicken in the microwave or in the oven before grilling, or place the chicken at least 6" from the coals to prevent the outside from burning before the inside is cooked.  If using sweet sauces, baste toward the end of grilling only - as they tend to burn.
